Elden Ring’s previously easy-to-miss tutorial, the appropriately titled Cave of Knowledge, is now virtually impossible to miss.
The change is part of the Elden Ring patch 1.04, which in addition to balancing a number of weapons, spells, and fixing various bugs, also added a mandatory prompt near the start of the game to ensure that players know its optional tutorial.
As confirmed by Eurogamer, shortly after dying (or defeating) the game’s first enemy and waking up in a cave, a prompt appears that says “Jump into the hole in front of you and you’ll find the Cave of Knowledge There, you can learn more about basic game controls and actions, as well as other tips that may come in handy on your adventures in the Lands Between.”
Some players and reviewers lambasted that the Cave of Knowledge tutorial was optional and so easy to navigate, because unless they interacted with the environment to learn more and take a leap of faith, it wasn’t. not entirely clear what awaited the players at the bottom of the hole. Based on Elden Ring’s sales figures, there are likely to be a large number of new players traveling through the Lands Between who may not be familiar with some of the quirks of previous From Software games, like Dark Souls, from which Elden Ring borrows heavily. With that in mind, it makes sense that the developer wants to make sure new players start off on the right foot by exploring the tutorial instead of wandering around Limgrave struggling to figure out the game’s basic functions.
Patch 1.04 is the second major balance patch for Elden Ring after launch. The previous patch 1.03 nerfed the fan-favorite Ash of War Hoarfrost Stomp and popular summon Mimic Tear, along with other changes. Patch 1.04, on the other hand, appears to improve dozens of spells and weapon abilities, either by decreasing their casting time, reducing the amount of stamina or FP they consume, or even increasing downright the damage they inflict.
