Amber Heard could be heard admitting punching Johnny Depp on a courtroom tape.
Ms Heard and Mr Depp argued over the physical altercation on the tape, in which she said she punched Mr Depp but did not ‘parry’ him. She also told Mr Depp to ‘grow up’, calling him a ‘baby’. The recording was played in court on Wednesday.
The defamation lawsuit between Mr. Depp and Ms. Heard began on Monday, April 11 in Fairfax, Va., following Mr. Depp’s lawsuit against his ex-wife in March 2019. Mr. Depp argues that she l libeled in a December 2018 op-ed published in The Washington Post titled “I spoke out against sexual violence – and faced the wrath of our culture. This must change”.
“You told me to do it. You said ‘go do this’ to me,’ Ms Heard said on the recording.
“You kicked me in this fucking thing,” Mr. Depp said.
“You got it all figured out,” Ms. Heard replied. “I didn’t hit you by the way.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t hit you in the face with a good slap,” she added. “I was hitting you, I wasn’t hitting you. You are not hit.
“Don’t tell me how it feels to be punched,” Mr. Depp said.
Ms Heard told Mr Depp ‘you know you’ve been in a lot of fights, for a long time’.
“You didn’t get punched, you got hit,” she added.
“I’m sorry. I hit you like that, but I didn’t hit you. I didn’t fuck you. I was fucking hitting you. I don’t know what my actual hand movement was. But you I’m fine. I didn’t hurt you,” Ms. Heard said.
“What am I supposed to do? Do this? I’m not sitting here bitching about it, am I? You are – that’s the difference between me and you. You are fucking baby,” she added.
As Mr Depp begins to respond, Ms Heard can be heard raising her voice saying ‘you’re such a baby, grow up, Johnny’.
Mr Depp asked her if she had started a “physical fight”.
“I started a physical fight,” Ms Heard said.
“Yeah you did, so I had to get out of there,” Mr Depp replied.
“You did the right thing. The big thing. You know what – you are admirable,” Ms Heard said in a tone described in court by Mr Depp as sarcastic.
A picture of Mr Depp was shown in court after he received what he called a ’round punch’ from Ms Heard. The photo was dated March 2015. Mr Depp said security guard Sean Bett took the photo.
In her 2018 op-ed, Ms Heard wrote in part that “like many women, I had been harassed and sexually assaulted when I was of college age. But I kept the silence – I didn’t expect the filing of complaints to do justice. And I didn’t see myself as a victim”.
“Then two years ago I became a public figure representing domestic violence, and I felt the full force of our culture’s anger for women speaking out,” she added to the era.
Although Mr. Depp is not named in the article, his legal team says it contains a “clear implication that Mr. Depp is a domestic abuser”, which they say is “categorically and patently untrue”. Mr Depp is seeking damages of “no less than $50 million”.
Ms. Heard has filed a $100 million counterclaim against Mr. Depp for nuisance and immunity from his claims.
